Jone Small Manoogian

Bio

Jone graduated from Stanford University with a BA and MA in Education in 1955-1956. She studied art at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills in the1980’s. and took book arts classes there and at the San Francisco Center for the Book in the late1990’s.

As the founder of the Bay Area Book Artists in 1995, and one of the founders of The South Bay Area Chapter of Women’s Caucus for art in 1989, Jone has brought her organizational skills as well as her enthusiasm in helping to form Bay Area artists’ groups. A late bloomer in art, she began painting in 1983 with her first series of our local Baylands salt marshes. Drawings and paintings of the women and children of Sierra Leone, West Africa, followed this body of work. The Na-Pali coast of Kaua’i was her next significant series. Starting in 1996, she began writing poems about Hawai‘i accompanied by small serigraph landscape prints. Island Heritage, of Madden Corporation, published this work in a mini book titled “Island Treasures”. The original poetry and art work for this book led to her discovery of the growing genre of artists’ books that are now her primary mode of artistic expression.

As BABA’s leader from 1995 until 2000 Jone organized many of BABA’s early shows. These were among the first “touchable” book arts shows offered in the Bay Area. She also curated or juried several other book arts shows including Book Nook at Works Gallery/San Jose, in 2000, Books As Art at the Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara in 2001, Touch My Books … Please, at the Art Museum of Los Gatos in 2004, and in 2005, Unbound-Bound at the Cultural Arts Council Gallery in Sonoma County, CA.

Jone has been teaching a variety of book binding skills in her Palo Alto studio as well as in Hawai‘i since 1996. She has done custom bookbinding for local community groups including the David Packard Foundation. Her artist’s books, in private and public collections, include the National Museum for Women in the Arts. For workshop information please contact the E-Mail address below.
